CLIENT PROFILE - NILIMA, 24 YEAR OLD FEMALE / BORN AND RAISED IN THE U.S.
When Nilima met a fellow South Asian at her workplace, they became friends, but she was not interested in anything more than that. Her coworker, however, would not take no for an answer and pursued her relentlessly. Over time, he became verbally and physically abusive. Matters worsened when he sexually assaulted her. Nilima was afraid to call the police or tell her family for fear of being reprimanded for having any sort relationship with a man. A few weeks later, she found out that she was pregnant as a result of her rape. Facing immense criticism and deeply ashamed, Nilima attempted to end her life. The social worker at the hospital ER suggested she call Daya.
Nilima began weekly counseling sessions with one of Daya’s licensed therapists. These sessions helped her process both the trauma from her abuse as well as the shame and judgment she felt from the community’s response. She was able to understand that what happened to her was not her fault. With her advocate, she filed a police report and is currently navigating the legal process, accompanied by her advocate each step of the way. Upon the birth of her child , Daya provided her necessary furniture, clothes, diapers and financial assistance for childcare. One year later, she continues to receive counseling and case management at Daya. Although her case is still ongoing, she is emotionally and mentally stronger and better equipped to face the future.
