CLIENT PROFILE - PRIYA, 37 YEAR OLD FEMALE, BORN AND RAISED IN INDIA

When Priya first contacted Daya she had suffered severe physical, emotional and financial abuse by her husband. Her visa status was tied to his and he used this as means of control, regularly threatening her with deportation. Isolating her from friends and family, he even prevented her from accessing the money from her own paycheck. Priya contacted Daya when he threatened to kill her, and our advocates sprung to action, connecting her to an emergency shelter and working with the DA’s office to get an emergency protective order filed against her abuser. When she was ready to file for divorce, Daya’s pro-bono attorneys worked closely with her to strengthen her case, and volunteers accompanied Priya to court, providing the emotional support she needed. With weekly counseling sessions with Daya, she was able process her trauma and slowly rebuild her confidence. She then applied for an independent visa through Daya’s legal clinic. One year later, Priya has her own apartment, a better job, and is living the independent and fulfilling life that she knew she was capable of. And one that she has always deserved.
